Knysna Extreme Triathlon: Africa's Toughest Race Revamps Route for 2026

03 November 2026

On 7 November 2026, 67 competitors will descend on Knysna, Western Cape, to take on the ninth edition of the gruelling Knysna Extreme Triathlon. The iconic event, positioned by organizers as a test of athleticism in its purest form, covers 229km of swimming, cycling and running through the Garden Route's challenging terrain.

Damaged roads and storm-felled trees have forced organizers to revise the 2026 course, with a new route published just days before the race. The toughened test includes an infamous 68km climb through the Knysna Forest on the bike leg, much to competitors' dread.

"Knysna Extreme is the test of tests, the ultimate endurance event for the Garden Route," Dan Knight, president of The Endurance Society, said in an interview. "Only one vehicle is allowed per athlete, meaning competitors must have a true support team or go it alone."

The Knysna Extreme is the marquee event in a growing season for triathlons along South Africa's Western Cape. It anchors a schedule of events with a worldwide reputation for scenic beauty and punishing terrain, including the Full Ironman Triathlon and Full Nelson Triathlon.

This year, the Knysna Extreme is accepting 100 individual entries and 10 team entries in the 229km extreme distance. A 3.8km swim, 180km bike, and 42km run test everything about a triathlete's preparation, including needing mandatory support, per the rulebook — and the tough luck of a mechanical breakdown on the road.

To minimize disruption to the Garden Route's iconic tourism corridors, the event has a point-to-point format, never overlapping the main roads between Thesen Islands, the swim start point, and Diepwalle Forest where competitors cross the line three to four days later, on average.

While the event is young, its founders claim one of the highest elevation gains of any triathlon in Africa. The event manual promises 3,331m of climbing across the course, concentrated in the 42km run through the forest.
