South African Endurance Athletes Hunt Marginal Gains
31 October 2026
Smarter recovery, sharper racing and deliberate equipment choices hold the key to an edge
Pacing, recovering, gear choices, will make or break seasons for South African endurance athletes in the unfolding year. The nation's top ultra-runners, coasting in 2025, are sharpening their preparation to eke out every possible advantage in a crowded calendar.
Recovery as Performance
South Africa's endurance athletes are increasingly prioritizing recovery as central to their performance strategy. For elite ultrarunners like Gerda Steyn, effective recovery practices are no longer an afterthought but a key performance driver.
Steyn, one of the world's top ultra-runners, attributed her quick recovery to genetics. But even with a natural advantage, the 2022 Two Oceans Ultra and 2025 Comrades champion stressed the importance of listening to her body and taking regular recovery days. "Sometimes even the best athletes need to take a day off," Steyn said on Cipla Health Matters in 2026. "Time in nature, reading, journalling - these things help me switch off and recharge."
This holistic approach to recovery is becoming more widespread. In a 2025 interview with SABC Sport, Steyn shared that she rarely does back-to-back races, allowing her body and mind time to fully recover between events. "I've been burned out in the past from over-training and doing too many races," she said. "Now I pick my races wisely and make time for rest."
This wisdom isn't just coming from the champions. In a piece published on January 5, 2025, Runner's World echoed the need for strategic recovery. The sports magazine warned that endurance athletes who fail to prioritize recovery risk overtraining, a hazard that can manifest as disrupted sleep, irritability, niggling injuries, and low-grade illness.
The publication advised, "Effective recovery involves a weekly regenerative day, such as total rest, gym work, cross-training or easy running." For ultra-runners targeting the year's pinnacle races, these recovery habits could be the difference between a podium finish and just crossing the line.
Race Selection and Seasonal Planning
The demands of a packed endurance calendar mean athletes must be increasingly selective in their racing. With a career spanning nearly a decade, Gerda Steyn knows all too well the dangers of overtraining. In 2025, she shared her race selection philosophy with SABC Sport: "I choose my races based on how I feel and what goals I have for the year. A hard race too much in a row can lead to burnout."
This year, Steyn will see how her strategy pays off against the backdrop of the 99th edition of the iconic Two Oceans Ultra. After eight gruelling months of racing in Andorra, France, Kenya and her home country, she now holds a clear advantage.
Khevyn Khonkhobe has also learned the hard way. The 24-year-old Comrades runner told SA Sports Press in 2026 that he'd over-raced in the 2017 Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra.
"I learned my lesson," he said. "The Motsepe Foundation Race to Gender Equality Marathon Half Marathon was a curated test of my fitness. Now, Two Oceans will be my first real race of the year."
This strategy isn't new among South Africa's endurance athletes. Nelgen Khatala, another Comrades contender, revealed in 2026 that she was focusing on a 10 km campaign to start a new year. The former 5 km athlete, who credits coach Andrew Booyens for her meteoric rise, will not race in Port Elizabeth. She's keeping powder dry for the big Ultra.
The trend shows no sign of slowing. The Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K will serve as Shushana Kulkarni's warm-up before the big league to check fitness ahead of the marathon that matters.

As you can see the strategy is clear: big races first, fitness-tune-ups only when needed. Banner Sundays without stretching too far too hard.
Under Another Task: Only the best camps, coach, and mentor, like Nedbank's Drakensburg preparation, George 12 km blasts, Mt. Frere in Klerksdorp, will energise the 2026 score sheets.
Pacing and Race Day Execution
For endurance athletes battling for milliseconds over half or full marathons, efficient pacing and race day strategy can make or break brilliance.
At the elite level, mistakes around race pacing can be costly. Elites need to save themselves and not ruin a whole race on an early surge. This wisdom emerged from modern sports commentary. With the publication of an edition of Long-distances on March 5 2027, some South African commentators signalled that athletes are tuning their game long before the race was run, recreating southern coast climbs in the heart of Europe's ski season.
But there's value in race-time pacing, too. South Africa's top contenders don't race to fatigue. They race to longevity in sport.
Another Tip: Reduce each leg burn. Cycles of hills and waterways are fine tuned. Climb, descend, sprints and jumps. The crunch will come. But not without a bot on feet, scones in hand and sitting in the zone. Take control by reducing risk by engineering pacing.
Gear and Marginal Gains
While improved recovery and pacing strategies offer performance improvements, some athletes are also looking at technical gear as a way to gain a competitive edge.
On March 5 2020, Runner's World published a piece called Savvy Gear Choices in which writer Jim McTeigue warned that although super-shoes are widely heralded as game-changers for marathon runners, the benefits were smaller for slower athletes. The shoes, McTeigue noted, could overload the foot and calf if not worn regularly.
"Let fantasy become reality" says McTeigue. "Reports suggest the weaponising of extreme shoes as an advantage for some and unrealistic. Most of us can add shoe size to shin splints."
For 2026, the debate around gear rules but not all welcome it. The reality is sites like Shushana Kulkarni Heroine glimpse strong March 5th performances. Onalenna Moloi Johns step longer and broader. Lesiba Mulaudu builds body weight from calf to core elevator.
What happens next?
Elite endurance athletes work in climax control. Pressure goes up, feeling goes down. Europe, Blouberg, Outeniqua's spires will come and make an appearance. Olympian heights will be tailed. Mount Frere will best Mark, etched into stone.
