South Africa's Trail-Running Calendar Heats Up for 2026-2027

21 October 2026

Trail runners around the world are eyeing South Africa as the season peaks, with a cluster of iconic races in the Western Cape and beyond serving as both a launchpad and showcase for the continent's growing presence in the sport. The schedule offers a mix of accessible shorter mountain tests alongside longer, expedition-style endurance events.

The 2026-27 season kicks off with the Table Mountain Challenge on 5 September 2026. The Cape Town fixture is a city staple, featuring 40km, 27km and 15km routes that circle fynbos singletracks around Table Mountain. Starting and finishing at Camps Bay Primary Sports Field, the race is known for steep ascents.

This warm-up act ushers in a series of more grueling mountain challenges over the next two months.

Mont-Aux-Sources Ultra Trail on 11-13 September 2026 takes top trail runners into the demanding Royal Natal National Park in the Drakensberg. The race is followed by the 4-day Otter African Trail Run through Tsitsikamma National Park from 23-26 September 2026.

But it is the longer, expedition-style races in November that bring the Western Cape into sharp focus for serious trail athletes. The season culminates with K-Way Sky Run in Lady Grey's Witteberg Mountains on 13-15 November 2026, and Ultra-Trail Cape Town on 20-22 November 2026, both in the Western Cape.

Ultra-Trail Cape Town is a highlight, featuring six distances from the 58km main event to a 107km Ultra Marathon that circumnavigates Table Mountain's famously dramatic backdrop. A 2,800-strong global trail-running field from 66 countries is expected for this event in 2026.

While the Table Mountain-centric races in November are well-established attractions, a new ultra-endurance offering alongside them is poised to make waves. Ultra X South Africa, scheduled for 19-24 October 2026, offers a 330km, 6-stage race through the Cederberg Conservancy, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Racing through daunting natural landscapes presents unique challenges, with runners required to drop gear at designated points throughout the multi-day competition.

What elevates this calendar into the global picture is Cape Town's growing importance as a trail-running hub, and the capacity of these key events to serve South Africa as a proving ground for future championships. The 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships will be held in Cape Town from 6 to 10 October 2027, marking the first time this event comes to Africa after previous editions in Innsbruck, Austria, and Argentina.

Both local fans and the global ultra-running community will watch closely as athletes tackle these demanding courses. These races, including newcomer Ultra X South Africa, demonstrate the excitement building around South Africa's trail-running scene. Mountain and trail running is flourishing, with the country emerging as a prime destination.
